The Department for International Development's overall aim is to reduce global poverty and promote sustainable development, in particular through achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Introduction to the e-forum by the Secretary of State for International Development, Hilary Benn MP, 30 March 2004

"I am delighted to welcome you to DFID's e-forum on 'new directions for agriculture in reducing poverty'.

DFID has always recognised the importance of agriculture to reducing poverty. But we need to do more. And we need to make our approach to agriculture even more effective by further improving the quality of work in order to provide real benefits to poor people.

Along with other development agencies, we recognise that new approaches are needed to unlock the full potential of agriculture to generate growth and reduce poverty. We must find practical, replicable ways that connect poor people with the market opportunities that agriculture offers; tackle their vulnerability to risk; and enable their voice to be heard in policies and institutions.

In developing these new approaches we need to learn from those with practical experiences. This e-forum is an innovative and exciting opportunity to gather ideas from all who share our commitment to agriculture. I hope you will contribute to what I'm sure will be a stimulating and highly productive debate."
